AmeriCorps NCCC Helping Improve Camp Experience at YMCA Camp Kitaki

LOUISVILLE, Neb. – An AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team is serving with YMCA Camp Kitaki from September 16 – November 15. The team is improving camp facilities and leading outdoor educational leadership programs for school groups.

The AmeriCorps NCCC team of 9 from the North Central Region campus in Vinton, Iowa is being split to serve in two groups to complete camp improvement projects and work directly with campers. Members are leading environmental lessons and team building activities through outdoor education programs for approximately 1,500 students in 5^th, 6^th and 7^th grades. Students are visiting camp in groups of about 100 at a time. Other AmeriCorps NCCC members are repairing and fixing facilities around the camp. Tasks include erosion control of camp’s trail system, tree trimmings, staining/painting cabins, constructing team building challenge courses, repairing Fort Pawnee outdoor play area, performing camp maintenance: replacing gutters, window screens, door screens, fire pits, winterizing all camp property, including the onsite pond.

Through their service, AmeriCorps NCCC members are helping improve the quality of the camp experience for campers and increase the usability of the facilities.

AmeriCorps member Anthony had this to say about the project, “I’m super excited to serve here at YMCA Camp Kitaki as it will be an extraordinary experience to serve and help out in an area I’ve never seen or discovered before.”

YMCA Camp Kitaki was founded in 1953 at the site. YMCA Camp Kitaki is a resident summer camp facility for ages 7-17, whose purpose is to build strong kids and adults through programs that promote positive identity, relationships, values and skills in a unique natural setting.  We are a dedicated group of professional youth developers who passionately believe in the power of the overnight camp experience and what it does to help grow a child's sense of self-worth and independence

Agricultural Estate/Farm Transition Planning Workshop coming to Weeping Water

LINCOLN, Neb., Oct. 7, 2019 – Nebraska Extension in Cass County will host a three-part Estate and Transition Planning Workshop for agricultural landowners, ranchers and farmers thinking about how they should proceed with plans to retire, exit or transfer the farm or ranch business. 

The series will be held Nov. 20, Dec. 4 and Dec. 10, 9:30-11:30 a.m. each day, at the Extension office near Weeping Water, 8400 144^th St., Suite 100.

“Retiring or passing the farm to the next generation is difficult to think about and is an admission of your own impending demise,” said Allan Vyhnalek, extension educator in farm succession.  “However, it is a necessary step and, with good planning, can be made as painless as possible.”           

The workshop will be free, but registration is requested and can be completed by contacting Nebraska Extension in Cass County at 402-267-2205, or in person at the Extension office, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.         

At the Nov. 20 workshop, Vyhnalek will cover the importance of having a plan, proper family communications and proper family negotiations. The Dec. 4 session will be led by Nick Montague, an attorney with Goosmann Law, and will cover end-of-life documentation, tax considerations at death and tools for estate planning like wills, trusts, LLCs and other business entities. The Dec. 10 workshop will be led by Randy Nesbit, a consultant with Protective Distributors, and Brent Connelly, a financial advisor with Edward Jones. They will cover the use of insurance products, investment strategies, buy/sell agreements and other transition strategies. 

“Reactions from past participants can be summarized into one comment: most wished that they had attended this workshop years earlier,” said Vyhnalek. “This program gives a good outline of the process farm and ranch businesses need to take to start or restart that process.”
