April 17, 2009, Lincoln— The Unicameral Youth Conference is an annual event for students who will enter grades 9 through 12 next fall. It will be held June 7-10 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Nebraska State Capitol. The Conference will provide a wonderful opportunity for young Nebraskans to learn about state government and our political system. Participants will take part in an interactive simulation that allows each young person to experience what it would be like to serve as a state senator and debate important policy issues. State senators often address the students at this Conference. I was invited to be a Conference presenter in 2007 and in 2008. I really enjoyed the experience, because the young people who participate in the Conference were so willing to learn and discuss new ideas.
The Unicameral Youth Conference
is sponsored by the University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension, Southeast
Research and Extension Center, and the University of Nebraska’s Cooperative
Extension 4-H Youth Development program, with technical support provided
by the Clerk of the Legislature’s Office and the Nebraska Legislature’s
Warner Institute for Education in Democracy. Information about fees
and scholarships is available at http://4h.unl.edu/programs/citizenship/civics/uyc/ Conference information is also available
through the Unicameral Information Office at 402-471-2788. The registration
deadline of May 1st for first-time attendees is fast approaching,
but there is still plenty of time to submit an application for the 2009
Conference. I encourage you to share this information about the 2009
Unicameral Youth Conference with any students you think may have an
interest in this fascinating, interactive learning experience.
Teachers and parents of elementary
school children know that Nebraska’s fourth grade social studies curriculum
requires that students learn about the history of our state. Every year
teachers from schools throughout the state bring these children to our
capital city to re-enforce what they have learned in the classroom.
Experiential learning opportunities abound in Lincoln in the State Capitol,
and at the governor’s mansion, the Museum of Nebraska History and
the State Museum on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. Some
of my most enjoyable moments as a state senator occur when I am able
to greet children who come to the Capitol to learn about our unique
legislative process. It is exciting to have the children visit the Legislature,
and be introduced and welcomed by everyone in the chamber.
As you may know, the Nebraska
Legislature’s Warner Institute for Education in Democracy has earned
national awards for its excellent educational materials and programs
for adults and school-aged children. Teachers use “America’s Legislators
Back to School Program” and Unicameral Kids
– A student’s Guide to the Nebraska Legislature.
“Project Citizen” offers a curriculum for grades 5-12 that promotes
competent and responsible participation in local and state government.
“Unicam Focus” is an online civics curriculum for grades 7-12. It
uses video interviews with lawmakers to educate students about representative
democracy, state government and Nebraska’s Unicameral Legislature.
I encourage teachers to notify my office if they plan to visit the Capitol
or want to receive printed materials prior to the visit.

Allan Jacobs and Barrett Felker have amazed and amused audiences around the world. The Gizmo Guys have strutted their stuff in places as diverse as Saudi Arabia and Japan and have taught juggling at the renowned French and Canadian National Circus Schools. But, what makes their act so appealing is their combination of technique and infectious humor. The Gizmo Guys' rapid-fire act inspires sidesplitting laughter in audience members of all ages.
The Gizmo Guys are based out of New York City, but have visited Nebraska several times in the past. Most recently they performed at Lincoln's Lied Center for the Performing Arts in 2007 and treated a sell-out crowd to their special brand of family entertainment.
The Gizmo Guys will be performing at the Lofte on Friday, May 8th at 7:00pm. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under. Their show generally runs about an hour.
Everyone from age 0-100 is encouraged to join us for this fun-filled evening. Bring the kids. Bring Grandma and Grandpa. The whole family will have fond memories of this one!
