MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE February 5, 2010, Lincoln -In 2007 I introduced LB 425 to adopt the Nebraska Operational Assistance Act (Act). The bill proposed to maintain an economic development program that began in 2002 and was renewed in 2005. LB 425 appropriated funds to the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED). DED then awarded the funds to a private, nonprofit organization to operate the program. The Act required the nonprofit organization to provide technical assistance to individuals and companies that lack the components to achieve their growth potential. The individuals and companies were then to be matched with people who were willing and able to make investments, in order to potentially realize profits in the future. The provisions of the Act, and the state funds that supported it, were expected to sustain the existing groundwork, from which new ideas could be launched to create high-paying jobs, import dollars to our state and expand our tax base.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CONNECTING YOUNG NEBRASKANS
CYN was established because
we want to help you enjoy
Connecting Young Nebraskans, (CYN) is
a social network of young Nebraskans who have joined together to discuss
and take action to promote change in Nebraska. In past years, it seems
that the voice of young Nebraskans has been missing on many important issues.
In an effort to address this, the University of Nebraska Rural Initiative
would like to encourage and support the formation and ongoing operation
of a 'Young Nebraskans' group. This group will belong to its members so
it's up to you to help shape it into something you want to be a part of.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Did you know... FEBRUARY is 4-H Month! "I pledge my head to clearer thinking. My heart to great loyalty. My hands to larger service. And my health to better living. For my club, my community, my country and my world."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Dear Louisvillians, Though our weather was wicked and a whirlwind of white on Monday, it was still the day designated to celebrate and honor our presidents of our great country. We should be thankful for our presidents and their leadership abilities over the years (even if we don't always agree with everything they say and/or do!). President's Day is the day devoted to specifically observing our Presidents of the past and honoring them for the service they did for America. Here are some of the words from the wise leaders of our past. This, by no means, encompasses all of the wonderful presidents we have had or the words that they have uttered; it includes a small selection of words to ponder as we realize the tremendous responsibilities that our bosses, our mayors, our governors, our senators and our governors all possess. Thank a leader today and be proud of our Presidential history. If you're inspired, you might even learn a little bit more about one of our past (or current) presidents. Check out a book, browse a website or even choose a quotation or two of your own that you would label as your favorite. For me, I know that I am thinking about a book on my "To-Read" list that discusses the First Ladies...hmm...maybe I should take my own advice!
Well, without further adieu, here are some of my favorite quotations to consder for this week:
* "Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing." --- Abraham Lincoln
* "I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past." --- Thomas Jefferson
* "America needs leaders, not labels." --- Ronald Reagan
I've found that it's often helpful to consider another person's words, when I'm struggling to articulate my thoughts. It's clear to me that there are many solid golden nuggets of wisdom to take away from these magnificent men. Though these were the men who have made the history books because of their leadership abilities (among many other traits), there are leaders everywhere among us. Find one in Louisville and thank them for the work they do in making our community, Louisville, a wonderful place to live. Your Louisville Editor, Paula
