Lofte Community Theatre Volunteer Recognition

Manley, NE [February 9, 2010]- Each February the Lofte Community Theatre takes a deep breath before the start of its new season. An evening is set aside to salute its volunteers and honor them with food and gifts. This year, the Volunteer Recognition and Annual Meeting is set for Saturday, February 27th at 6pm.

The Dale Crosby Awards will be given to three of the Lofte's most outstanding volunteers. The award is named in honor of long-time Lofte President and friend, Dale Crosby of Weeping Water whom we lost in 2001. Mr. Crosby was a man who never found any job too small or unimportant. His dedication and hard work inspired many and he is still sorely missed.

In conjunction with the Volunteer Recognition activities, the Lofte Board of Directors will conduct a short business meeting to inform the public of its financial standing and plans for the future. Artistic Director, Kevin Colbert will review the 2009 season highlighting his favorite performances and fondest memories. He will also announce his show selections for the 2011 season.

All members of the Lofte Community Theatre are invited to attend. Membership is earned if you have ever purchased a ticket, volunteered your time, donated funds or performed on stage. Basically, if you've ever been to the Lofte or helped in any way, you're invited! The evening is your chance to relax, catch-up with old friends and enjoy some delicious food.

Please RSVP for this event by calling the box office at (402) 234-2553 or emailing Jean Colbert at LofteTickets@Lofte.com

PIctured Below:  Lynn Plucknett and Nikki Biesterfeld of Louisville are just two of

the many volunteers that it takes to make the Lofte a success.

MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE

February 5, 2010, Lincoln -In 2007 I introduced LB 425 to adopt the Nebraska Operational Assistance Act (Act). The bill proposed to maintain an economic development program that began in 2002 and was renewed in 2005. LB 425 appropriated funds to the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED). DED then awarded the funds to a private, nonprofit organization to operate the program. The Act required the nonprofit organization to provide technical assistance to individuals and companies that lack the components to achieve their growth potential. The individuals and companies were then to be matched with people who were willing and able to make investments, in order to potentially realize profits in the future. The provisions of the Act, and the state funds that supported it, were expected to sustain the existing groundwork, from which new ideas could be launched to create high-paying jobs, import dollars to our state and expand our tax base.

I selected LB 425 as my priority bill in 2007. The bill passed with strong support from the body. The adoption of the Nebraska Operational Assistance Act continued an existing economic development tool to support the efforts of individuals and organizations in Nebraska, who need assistance to transform ideas into commercially successful projects. I was pleased to introduce and successfully managed a bill to maintain the strength of Nebraska's economic development portfolio.

Last week I learned that two Nebraska programs designed to help rural businesses will receive federal stimulus money. Invest Nebraska Corporation (Corporation), the nonprofit organization to which DED awarded the funding that resulted from the passage of LB 425, will be given $200,000 for business loans in 35 rural counties. The Corporation held five regional new venture competitions in 2009. The southeast Nebraska competition took place in Peru. Monson Family Foods in Nebraska City was the winner of a $25,000 equity prize. Because this regional competition took place in Otoe County, the county will be one of the 35 counties to receive a portion of the federal stimulus funds.

The Invest Nebraska Corporation promotes capital formation for and provides operating assistance to entrepreneurs and investors in Nebraska. It is a resource for start-up and emerging companies that have the potential to become high-growth businesses capable of attracting investment capital.

In addition to its five regional new venture competitions, the Corporation sponsors several other programs. Local Venture Symposiums are offered to educate Nebraska entrepreneurs about the various levels of capital funding and to give accredited investors the opportunity to connect with potential angel (high net worth) investment opportunities. The Corporation organizes local high school competitions. These events take place on the same day and in the same location as the New Venture Competitions. The high school competitions are held to identify and recognize students, who are interested in starting their own business some day. The competition is a starting point for students to share their ideas, organize concepts and compete against each other for a cash prize. The Operational Assistance Program is a source of funding for companies with the potential to attract angel individuals or venture capital. To qualify for the Operational Assistance Program a company must: (a) be based in or be willing to locate in Nebraska, (b) demonstrate potential to become backed by angel or venture capital investors and (c) be positioned so that operational assistance from Invest Nebraska can significantly impact the probability of securing funding from angel or venture capital investors.

It was great to learn that something I played a role in during my first year as a state senator is continuing to make a positive difference for our state.
I appreciate the opportunity you have given me to represent District 2 in the Nebraska Legislature.

CONNECTING YOUNG

 NEBRASKANS

CYN was established because we want to help you enjoy
your community by broadening your horizon
of what's possible!

Connecting Young Nebraskans, (CYN) is a social network of young Nebraskans who have joined together to discuss and take action to promote change in Nebraska. In past years, it seems that the voice of young Nebraskans has been missing on many important issues. In an effort to address this, the University of Nebraska Rural Initiative would like to encourage and support the formation and ongoing operation of a 'Young Nebraskans' group. This group will belong to its members so it's up to you to help shape it into something you want to be a part of.

Now is the time to join the CYN Network and start asking those critical questions that will affect your lifestyle in Nebraska! If you know someone who may be interested or who can benefit from CYN, please email Kayla at
kchurchill4@unl.edu and ask to add them to the email list. Keep in mind that any successful group takes time to mature and grow, so be patient throughout this development process, and make suggestions about how the future of our state will look for you.

 Museum Exhibits

Cass County Museum opened two new temporary exhibits during January.  The  annual Valentine exhibit contains 132 Valentines ranging in date from the 1880s to the 1950s.  Many are on view for the first time, having been donated in the past year by Neil Lancaster and FloraBelle Wehrbein.

“Strike up the Band”, an exhibit of Cass County Bands from 1883 to 1910, is also on display.  The photographs include bands from the MWA, Burlington shops, Wabash, Plattsmouth, and Murdock.

Both exhibits run through March 6.

The museum's Brown Bag series begins Tuesday, February 9, with a program by Dan Reis on Photo Conservation.

Cass County Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. For additional  information, call the museum 296-4770.

Remember your Recorder?

Check out the Avoca Schoolhouse!

The Old Avoca (Nebraska) Schoolhouse will celebrate the seventeenth annual Play-the-Recorder Month in March by offering a Beginning Recorder Workshop on Saturday, March 13, from 1 PM - 3 PM.   Deborah Greenblatt, Master Artist with the Nebraska Arts Council, and member of the American Recorder Society, will lead the workshop.  Pre-registration is required, and enrollment is limited.  The $30.00 fee includes an instruction book, and a soprano recorder.  Pre-registration is required, and enrollment is limited.  For more information, call 402-275-3221, or send an e-mail to debby@greenblattandseay.comdebby@greenblattandseay.com .

Founded in 1939, the American Recorder Society is celebrating 70 years of service to its members and constituents--all recorder players including amateurs to leading professionals, students to teachers.  It has some 130 chapters and consorts in the U.S. and Canada, where its membership base is over 2200, plus 130 members in 28 other countries.

Play-the-Recorder Month grew out of an event staged as part of an "ARS 50" anniversary celebration, during which members all over the world played a recorder piece simultaneously on April 1, 1989.  Play-the-Recorder Day was first officially held in 1992, and then expanded to Play-the-Recorder Month the following year.

  Dear Louisvillians,

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have been completely soaking up the events that are being showcased to us from Vancouver, Canada during the Winter Olympics.  I have been mesmerized by the ice skaters, dancers, the snowboarders and skiiers!  The athletic abilities of these fine competitors and the ambition and perseverance they have displayed is amazing to watch, to put it mildly.  If you haven't had a chance to watch any of the Olympics, be sure to check it out.  You won't be disappointed.

In thinking about the Olympics, which is a global event, encompassing many nations, as was showcased at the Opening Ceremonies, I started thinking about the Olympics on a more local level.  I think it's only appropriate to mention (and brag a bit) that the United States has the highest medal count (as of this writing) with 25 total medals.  We have received 7 golds, 8 silvers and 10 bronze medals.  Wow!  Impressive stats!  But, do you know what's equally impressive?  Our little community of Louisville.  I think there are some worthy recipients of the gold, silver and bronze here in our own community.  Though there are many people who should and could be recognized, I opted to focus on the WINTER aspect since we're currently watching the Winter Olympics.

GOLD: Those fine men (and women??) who make sure our streets are plowed and that the snow is off of our streets of Louisville receive the GOLD medal.  I don't know about the rest of you, but I have been in other small towns, where the snow removal is not half as good as it is here!  Kudos to these people who operate according to the weather's crazy patterns, not a normal 9-5 shift.  Thank you for your time, energy and efforts.  Hopefully, your job is almost finished??!  Thank you for all you do!  We appreciate it.

SILVER:  The silver medal should be awarded to those fine volunteers who offer to remove snow from other people's sidewalks without any monetary compensation.  I know of many students and adults who offer their time and their strong backs to shovel other peoples' sidewalks, driveways and decks for nothing more than a smile.  In fact, some of my own neighbor boys did this for me when I first moved to Louisville.  I still remember that token of kindness and will not soon forget it.  Thank you, volunteers, for helping those in need.  The silver is rightly awarded to you.

BRONZE:  To anyone who enjoys the snow, has built a snowman, has crafted a snowangel, who has constructed a snowfort, who has formed the most perfectly spherical snowball...the bronze goes to you!  You have successfully enjoyed winter and the frigid temperatures and the mounds of white on the ground...and made the BEST of it.  Winter is the perfect season for all of these activities, and if you're still hoping to receive the bronze, feel free to head outside and take advantage of the winter whiteness that is still on the ground.  As of this writing, it's still there (in case you didn't notice!).

There you have it, folks.  The winners of the Louisville Olympian Winter Olympics...it's been a marathon, not a sprint this winter, wouldn't you agree?  Thank these people the next time you see them.  All of these people really make Louisville a wonderful place to live.  Happy Winter to all of you!
