Ringing in the Season Event

Was a Huge Success!

At the BUILD meeting yesterday, Nikki Biesterfield and Kitran Geise gave a recap of Ringing in the Season which was a huge success. There were over 55 kids that visited Santa. The Red Nose Run had 61 paid runners/walkers. The money
earned will go towards the Angel Trees in town. Nikki & Kitran received permission to spend the money as suggested: up to $50/angel tree gift and the excess donated to the Royal Neighbors to beneñt CASA. Everything the Royal Neighbors earn is doubled by the national organization. B.U.I.L.D. greatly appreciates those businesses who donated for the event: Ash Grove, NE Brewing Company, Louisville Family Dental and Blake’s Pharmacy. A summary of the event is attached in B.U.I.L.D. meeting minutes.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cass County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program

Welcomes Three New Volunteers

The Cass County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program is proud to announce that three new CASA Volunteers were sworn-in by Judge John Steinheider. A brief reception was held following the ceremony to wish the new CASA Volunteers well in their advocacy for Cass County’s abused and neglected children. The new CASA volunteers are Kelly Linse, Tracy Marshall and Megan Sierks.

There are a total of 17 Cass County children who are under the jurisdiction of the court because of abuse and/or neglect. Children range in age from two to 18 years old. Currently, we have nine active CASA volunteers advocating for these children.

CASA volunteers usually work with one case at a time. They get to know the children well and write reports for the Judge, making recommendations about what would be best for the child. They become a stable, reliable presence in the child’s life during a very difficult time, and advocate for the child to have a safe and permanent home as quickly as possible.

The Cass County CASA program was started in 2005. CASA volunteers are ordinary people doing an extraordinary thing by having an impact on the lives of abused and neglected children. Most volunteers donate about 2 hours per week (or 8 hours a month) and all training is provided. A portion of the pre-service training expenses were paid for by a grant from the Nebraska CASA Association. If you are interested or want more information, please call or e-mail Angie Neumiller, Program Director at 402-296-9520 or director@casscasa.org.

Additional information can be found at www.casscasa.org , www.nebraskacasa.org or
www.nationalcasa.org.

Need for blood continues during holiday season

OMAHA, Neb. (Nov. 15, 2012) — Every day, patients across the country rely on blood and
platelets donated through the American Red Cross. While the need is
ongoing, the supply isn’t — especially around the holidays, when

the Red Cross!

Blood and platelet donations help save the lives of people like Amy
Jones, who was diagnosed with leukemia at 10 years old and underwent
chemotherapy treatments every six weeks. Like many cancer patients,
Jones received several transfusions.

Jones’s leukemia went into remission after two and a half years of
treatments, but she eventually relapsed, forcing her to endure more
intense chemotherapy. After receiving more than 100 pints of donated
blood and platelets, her cancer went into remission again. Now in her
30s, Jones has been cancer-free for almost 20 years and encourages
others to donate.

The only way to provide lifesaving blood and platelets for patients in
need is through the generosity of donors. Donors can help the Red

Cross maintain a stable blood supply this holiday season by making an
appointment to donate at redcrossblood.org or 1-800-RED CROSS.

Upcoming blood donation opportunities:

Cass County
Dec. 10 from 1-7 p.m. at Town Hall, 623 House St. in Avoca, Neb.
Dec. 10 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Plattsmouth High School, 1916 E.
Highway 34 in Plattsmouth, Neb.
