Photo Exhibit of Nebraska’s Fallen at Louisville Public Schools

March 4 – 8, 2013

(Louisville, NE) A very emotional exhibit, “Remembering Our Fallen,” is a sad reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by over 80 Nebraskans killed in The War on Terror while wearing our country’s uniform in Afghanistan or Iraq. The photo display will be coming to Louisville Public Schools in Louisville, NE.

“The warriors of the 21st Century, professionals, who volunteered to join the United States Armed Forces, grew up in the shadow of September 11, 2001, a defining moment for most of them. They come from all walks of life and every corner of our country, daring to go where so many never would. They retain the face of freedom and build upon the legacies of those who went before them in a cause greater than themselves.”

“We can never forget those who sacrificed everything for our freedom. We must remember these American Heroes and speak their names when we see their family members,” said Bill Williams, exhibit co-creator. “This exhibit is created so it can travel easily throughout Nebraska, so that more people will have the opportunity to honor and remember Nebraska’s Fallen. Thanks to Midlands Community Foundation, who is a sponsor of the Nebraska High School Educational Tour in Sarpy and Cass Counties, making it possible for this exhibit to be at Louisville Public Schools.”

“Remembering Our Fallen” will be on display March 4-8 in The Lion's Den room which is in the elementary end of the school. Community members may park in the elementary parking lot and use the elementary entrance. When you stop by the office to get your visitor's badge, you will receive directions to The Lion's Den.

The exhibit’s appearance is made possible by the Tour Sponsorship of Midlands Community Foundation and viewing is open to the public. Remembering Our Fallen was created by Bill & Evonne Williams of Patriotic Productions, Omaha, with the financial support of Bellevue University, who has solely sponsored the financial support of similar displays in eight other states: Iowa, Missouri, Colorado, Arizona, Kansas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and North Dakota.

If you would like to host the display, please contact Bill Williams of Patriotic Productions at bwilliams@rememberingourfallen.org or 402-612-0210. More information is available at: www.rememberingourfallen.org

Louisville Awareness Slogan Contest

Continues till April 15th

Winners to be named by May 1st

Thank you to all who submitted an entry into the Louisville Awareness Slogan Contest. The BUILD committee was overwhelmed by the response. After reviewing the 210 entries and forming a subcommittee to help select a winner, we realized we had failed to provide proper direction.

From the start of this process, we envisioned a new slogan for Louisville that local businesses could use in their advertising to help create greater awareness of the close proximity of the town in relation to the metropolitan areas to the northeast and southwest. Reflecting back to the beginning of the contest and judging by entries received, we don’t believe we made this focus very clear.

We have decided to reopen the contest for new entries that emphasize our location (in proximity to Omaha & Lincoln) and opportunity in Louisville. We’re looking for a slogan that tells everyone where we are and what makes us a unique community. We will accept new slogans through April 15th, 2013. We hope to have a new, flashy slogan and award the winners by May 1st. Please email all slogan entries to Louisvillebuild@gmail.com

All slogan entries received to this point are still in consideration to be chosen and awarded one of the three prizes. We just didn’t feel right about selecting a winner when only 10 – 15% of the entries were focused on the criteria we are looking for. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,
Louisville BUILD

Here are some clarifications on rules:

Question: now with the additional clarification, are previous entrants allowed to re-submit additional suggestion for consideration? Yes
Meaning: participant will have 2 entries under consideration if additional entry has been submitted

Everyone may submit an entry, it does not matter if you have submitted previously or not. Still one prize per person/household.

The committee reserves the right to “modify” or “change” wording if necessary.

New On-line Tickets System at the Lofte

ticketsthing

The Lofte is working hard to meet and exceed our patrons' expectations in regards to customer service. Last summer, box office staff noticed that the current ticketing system (which had been in place since 2006) was suffering and needed to be put out to pasture. Thanks to a generous donation from Rick and Pat Iske, The Lofte was able to shop around and find a replacement ticketing service that will carry us well into the future!

The internet based system now allows patrons to not only purchase their tickets online, but select their own seats and have the option of printing tickets at home, sending them to a mobile device, or picking up the tickets at will call on the night of the show! Instead of tearing your tickets upon entering the auditorium, ushers will use a scanner to confirm your ticket and instantly calculate the night's attendance.

The box office staff continues to streamline the computer process to best match our customer's needs. Rest assured that your season ticket orders will be coming within the next couple of weeks and while their appearance may only be slightly different, it represents a whole lot of improvement!

Reshoring Jobs Back to America

This month, Heather Macholan of Howells, Nebraska, was awarded a “Women in Manufacturing STEP award” for her excellence in science, technology, engineering, and production. I had the pleasure of congratulating her for her hard work and ingenuity when she visited me in Washington.  We talked about manufacturing’s importance in providing good paying jobs that can support families and its role in strengthening and diversifying local economies.

During our meeting, I learned of a new word: “reshoring.”  Recall several years ago when the word “outsourcing” first appeared.  Companies were shifting manufacturing and other services overseas.  The alarming trend in manufacturing seemed overwhelming as more and more industrial products lost their American branding.  I am sure you have also had the experience of speaking to a customer service center that seems really far away.  “Reshoring” is the new term that describes the trend of jobs coming back to America.  It is an encouraging pattern and a great opportunity to accelerate our economic recovery.

Manufacturing has historically been one of America’s – and Nebraska’s – economic bright spots.  Recently, it’s experienced new growth.   According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Nebraska has added more than 3,000 manufacturing jobs in the past three years. Many of these manufacturing jobs are found in Nebraska’s First Congressional District, in what I like to call Nebraska’s “manufacturing triangle.” The communities of Columbus, Norfolk, and Fremont all boast a strong industrial base rooted in specialized manufacturing.

A number of factors contribute to “reshoring.” Wage rates have leveled somewhat between the U.S. and other nations, while the cost of transporting raw materials and finished products has increased. Energy costs have dropped domestically, due to increased American energy production and the application of new practices and technology that increase energy efficiency.  Growth is also a result of the dedicated focus of people and non-profit organizations working together to promote new manufacturing jobs. In Nebraska, we have a chapter of the Dream!t Do!t Initiative, which encourages young people to seek careers in manufacturing.  You can learn more about this effort at http://www.dreamitdoitnebraska.com/

In Washington, many are calling for a renewed push to increase manufacturing jobs in the United States.  For its part, the federal government can help by continuing to encourage American energy independence (through new forms of responsible energy generation and conservation), recreating a reasonable regulatory environment, and implementing the right type of tax reform that encourages entrepreneurship and small business.

It will be innovative manufacturers like Heather, though, who will help ensure that “reshoring” is not just a trend, but an important component of America’s economic recovery. If we are serious about rebuilding the “Made in America” label, the innovation and vision of manufacturing leaders and small business entrepreneurs in Nebraska offers the nation a solid model of how to move forward.
