Happy May Day!

May Day on May 1 is an ancient Northern Hemisphere spring festival and usually a public holiday; it is also a traditional spring holiday in many cultures (See wiki article about May Day origins and traditions). Over the centuries May Day celebrations in various countries became very diversified - from traditional celtic to political holiday (International Workers' Day).

For example, in Russia (wikipedia described it quite accurate here) "May Day was celebrated illegally until the February Revolution enabled the first legal celebration in 1917. It became an important official holiday of the Soviet Union, celebrated with elaborate popular parade in the centre of the major cities. The biggest celebration was traditionally organized on the Red Square, where the General Secretary of the CPSU and other party and government leaders stood atop Lenin's Mausoleum and waved to the crowds. Since 1992, May Day is officially called "The Day of Spring and Labour", and remains a major holiday in present-day Russia."

It was tiresome, really - while it was public holiday and day off for everyone, my school required every student to bring baloons and branches decorated with paper flowers to wave at the local parade. So, every year on the eve of May 1st the same drill: cut some branches, get parents to help making flowers of crinckled colored paper (the bigger the better), attach them to the branches, etc. On May Day at 10am everyone would gather at the school yard, get organized by class, and walk all the way to the main square in town (miles!) to wave the branches at the local political leaders (thus expressing solidarity with oppressed workers all over the world AND making it clear that in the former USSR none of the workers were oppressed but quite happy). After that, dump the branches somewhere, walk back home since all traffic was blocked for hours, and save the rest of the day by having a nice dinner with the family.

On my personal calendar, May 1st has always been - first and foremost - my grandmother's birthday! :)
