Remembering September 11, 2001

It is hardly possible to find people in US who do not remember where they were at the time of the September 11 attack.

I was at the BUILD meeting at the Senior Center in Louisville. Lynn Berner has started the meeting as usual; about 15 min later Lloyd Braak came into the hall and said :"One of the Twin Towers has just been hit by a passenger airplane". Melody Stohlman who was sitting next to me gasped "Ahhhh!!", everybody was stunned. At the time I did not know that Twin Towers were a symbol of New York skyline and I was wondering what that meant. Dave Pankonin turned on TV and we saw smoke coming out of the North Tower, then the second airplane flew into the South Tower as we watched it in real time. The realization that the United States mainland was under attack was slowly sinking in.

All planes in the US were grounded, president on board of Airforce One left Florida. Later that day, I happened to be in Omaha and a large airplane flew very low over a parking lot towards Bellevue. Suddenly, Nebraska was in the news, President Bush arrived at Offutt Air Force Base...

Do you remember where you were that day?
